Tree of Life Point Paper
Date: Est 1926-35
Origin: East Germany
‘Tree of Life’ design (ref AH Tree of Life) is a reproduction of an original point paper from East Germany. The point paper and a sample of original fabric was purchased in Como, Italy in 2000 by Richard M R Smith who ran a jacquard fabric weaver, E&S Smith of Stadium Mills, Odsal, Bradford.
The item was part of a collection ‘rediscovered’ after the reunification of East and West Germany in 1989. The collection was found by returning family members at their family Mill premises which was still locked and boarded up as left by their fleeing relatives in East Germany.
It is estimated that this ‘tree of life’ design was drawn up and then 1st woven between 1926 and 1935.
The original fabric and technical point paper enabled E&S Smith to reproduce the fabric and supply to flooring and furnishing specialist Fired Earth in 1999
