Date: Est 1926-35
Origin: East Germany
The original point paper (ref AH 6995) is a facsimile reproduction of an original point paper from East Germany.
The point paper was purchased in Como, Italy in May 2000 by Richard M R Smith. Richard ran his family jacquard fabric weaver, E&S Smith of Stadium Mills, Odsal, Bradford at this time and used these archive pieces to stimulate ‘new’ work.
The International Textile Archive Specialist, the point paper art was purchased from, stated that this item was part of a collection ‘rediscovered’ after the reunification of East and West Germany in 1989. The collection was found by returning family members at their family mill premises which was still locked and boarded up as it was left by their fleeing relatives in East Germany. The artist and whereabouts of the Mill are unknown.
We estimate that the two large sections of the original point paper pieces were drawn up and then first woven between 1926 and 1935. The original weaves drawn on this design will have produced a fine plain ground with a textured weft-faced figure in relief.
