Life-size Crewel Point Paper
Date: 1910
Origin: Alsace, France
The ‘Crewel’ Life size art is a reproduction of an original point paper from France (ref MB2302). The point paper and a sample of original fabric was purchased at Sotheby’s in London in 1996 by Richard M R Smith. Richard ran his family jacquard fabric weaver, E&S Smith of Stadium Mills, Odsal, Bradford at this time.
This work and others were part of a collection of archive textiles and designs collected by Monsieur Marcel Blanc, who was a successful fabric producer and wholesaler in the Alsace district of France in the early to mid-1900’s.
The production number 2302 was created in 1910 at the Koenig & Cie factory in St Marie, Alsace. The archive fabric sample woven from this point paper was part of a series of fabrics woven with a cotton warp and a wool weft which formed a embroidered figure similar to Crewel work. The point paper detail could enable a jacquard weaver today to replicate their version of this fabric.
