Lifesize Chrysanthemum
Date: 1900
Origin: Paris, France
Chrysanthemum is a graceful floral repeat centred on large stylized chrysanthemum blooms rendered in soft lavender tones. Rising from elongated stems and framed by sculptural green foliage, the flowers are arranged in a vertical rhythm across a pale grey ground enriched with delicate botanical tracery. The restrained palette and flowing organic forms create an elegant decorative pattern characteristic of Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts influences, balancing simplicity with ornamental sophistication.
The original hand painted design was drawn up in 1900 in a Paris textile design studio for French weaver Felix Vanouytryve. This Roubaix based weaver needed perforated loom cards for their Jacquard machines to transfer the weave detail of this pattern into woven threads.
There are various technicians hand notes around the perimeter of the artwork adding a human touch from the past. The pencil grid lines mark the design repeat of 'Montage' 17145 and the chart on the foot of the art relates to the lay of the warp stripes.
